I was being over charged for a basic procedure I could do myself. When I denied the service and told them I would do it myself, they were very short, rude and patronizing. I know it's a car garage, I keep low expectations for places like these but they managed to go way below disrespectful. I thought I had found a good, honest, car shop near my house but I was proven wrong.
They charged my wife $200 to remove the floodlights from our car to pass inspection. They wanted to charge over $200 to replace the valve stem on my tire. Merchant's did it for $75 (the sensor needed replacing). We gave University our business for years because we had no idea how much more everything costs here. I had an entire rear brakes service that cost $250 less elsewhere than what University wanted to charge me.
Shady business practices, poor quality work.
This company needs to rein in there prices and quality control. Something is off, and if you talk to ANYONE in the area, at auto stores, it's the unspoken truth: University is over priced and willing to take advantage of your ignorance. Shop around. Don't take your car here for inspections.
Very disappointing service, sorry you can't give 0 stars. I took my car to be inspected on 9/20/17 and it failed. Was told I needed to replace RR shock but should replace both. I told them ok just put the rejection sticker on my car and I'd have my mechanic take care of it within the 15 day window. Got repair done by my mechanic and this time my husband took the car to be reinspected on 9/30/17. Car FAILED AGAIN!!! Was told this time it failed because I had a knot on one of my tires and they were dry rotted. How was all this missed the first time??? Now I need not 1 but 4 tires!!!! Are you serious????? I probably would have been ok with 2 tires but 4...really!!!! I realize it was the end of the month but wow I'm confused. What else haven't you told me needs to be repaired to pass inspection. I've been a repeat customer for years and this is actually the second car I've taken there and have never had problems before. I'm done with University Tire and you will never get another dime or referral from me.
They also over torqued my lug nuts to the point where I couldn't get them off with a 400 ft lb impact driver (spec is 90 ft lbs); I had to use a breaker bar with a 3 foot jack handle to get them off. Nothing was lubricated as it was put back together. A reputable shop would apply anti seize to bolts as they're reassembled, especially brake parts since they're so exposed to the elements. This may seem petty, but these are the sort of corner cutting practices that cost you money in the future. Spend the extra money and go to a real shop, it'll save you in the long run.
They failed my inspection to sell me on a brake job that didn't need to be done. They said I needed new brake pads and rotors. I measured the pads, and the rotors and they both had at least a year left in them based on the tolerances in the factory shop manual. They also quoted me over $500 for the service when the parts retail for $120 and the job shouldnt take more than an hour if you know what you're doing.
I have always had great service at the Main st location. As a woman you are always told you will get taken for a ride when you bring in your car for service, not here. I have been coming here since moving to Charlottesville a few years ago and never had a bad experience.
